About this work

This is one of Anahita’s storyteller pieces, half portrait, half song. She has pressed real paisley into the turban, so the pattern belongs to the clay rather than sitting on top of it, and set a small carved medallion at the temple. The flute is a real ney laid into the piece before firing, which fixes a whole memory of music inside the relief. Look at the confidence in the eyes and the red mouth, and the way she trusts the turquoise ground to hold everything together.
