About this work
The picture is built on two great bands, a soft blue sky above and a warm coral horizon below, with a strip of quiet blue sea at the base. On the right, an island abbey rises out of the tide, its towers and pitched roofs picked out against the light. A gull glides in from the left, keeping the composition breathing. It has the feel of a place remembered rather than photographed, held in a warm evening light.
