About this work
The eye is drawn straight down the river. On the left bank palms lean towards the water, a small group rests with a camel and a laid-out rug, and the sand is warmed with ochre and pale rose. Feluccas cross the blue in ones and twos, sails full and quiet. On the far shore a low pale city rises with the pyramids just visible beyond, and the sky slips from clean blue overhead to a peach and cream haze at the horizon. It is a scene held very gently, more remembered than observed.
