About this work
Two little sentries hold the fence, one brown, one black, both looking directly out at us. Behind them the river slides past a low bank of grass and reeds and the land rises to soft blue hills at the horizon. The paint is loose, quick, cheerful: dabs of red for wildflowers, a few strokes for a distant tree. Notice the shadows under the dogs, dropped in with confidence, that anchor them into a real afternoon.
