About this work
A cat painted almost head on, more presence than portrait. The face is worked in careful passes: yellow eyes with narrow pupils, a small pink nose, a dark line where the mouth begins. Around it, the fur is not drawn but suggested with long dry sweeps of white, a hundred whiskers rushing outward. The dark ground behind gives the sitter the still, watchful weight of a house animal that has decided to sit for its picture.
