About this work
This is painting as drawing: the whole figure is set down in a handful of confident sweeps. Notice the black ground worked over with dry cross-hatched brush marks, and how the pale flesh tones are lifted almost like chalk against a blackboard. The face is barely a suggestion; the arm and the fall of the hair do all the storytelling.
