About this work
One half of the picture is on fire, the other half is calm. The red is laid on thickly and lifted with the brush, so the cloud has texture as well as heat. Where it meets the blue the two colours turn to a muted violet, the way a real sunset softens before it goes out. Along the base, a low horizon of scrub is stippled in dark browns and blacks, pinpricked with the last of the red light.
